Newby and substitute Malcolm see York City beat Exeter City

· Match Report

York City beat Exeter City 2-1 in League Two at the LNER Community Stadium on Saturday, Alex Newby's early opener and a Jovan Malcolm goal enough to hold off a stoppage-time reply from Jack Fitzwater.

Newby put York ahead in the 6th minute; Malcolm, on for Ollie Pearce ten minutes earlier, restored the two-goal cushion in the 75th before Fitzwater pulled one back for Exeter in the 90th, the final score.

York had much the better of it: 11 attempts on goal to Exeter's eight, eight on target to two, and 67.5% of possession. York also won seven corners to Exeter's five but conceded more fouls, 12 to 10.

Exeter picked up three cautions to York's two: Reece Cole, Gwion Edwards and Charlie Cummins were booked between the 32nd and 61st minutes, Morgan Williams and Ryan Fallowfield for York in the 40th and 51st. There were no red cards.
