Wrexham's winless start to the Championship season was extended to three games as they lost 2-1 at home to Birmingham City, beaten by two headers from centre-back Phil Neumann at the Racecourse Ground.
Neumann opened the scoring in the 12th minute, heading in Alex Cochrane's delivery, and Birmingham threatened to add to the lead before the break. Wrexham improved after the restart and levelled through Callum Doyle, who side-footed home Lewis O'Brien's cross in the 53rd minute. The lead lasted nine minutes: Neumann then escaped Zak Vyner's attention to nod in a second, from August Priske, in the 62nd.
"In all my time here, I think those two are the softest goals we've conceded," said Phil Parkinson, the Wrexham manager, after the match. "We've got to give ourselves a chance and defend the box better than we've done tonight." Alex Cochrane and Bright Osayi-Samuel were both booked for Birmingham; Bailey Cadamarteri, on as a second-half substitute, was the only Wrexham player cautioned.
Parkinson made four substitutions in the 70th minute, bringing on Josh Windass, back after a preseason calf injury, and permanent signing Issa Kaboré among them, and Wrexham pushed for a second equaliser late on without finding one.
