Wigan Athletic kicked off their League One campaign in style with a commanding 3-1 victory over Northampton Town at the Brick Community Stadium. The home side's early dominance set the tone for an afternoon they controlled from start to finish.
Debutant Fraser Murray was the standout figure with two goals, while Jensen Weir also found the net as Wigan raced clear before Michael Forbes pulled one back for the visitors.
Wigan Take Control Before the Break
Wigan's early dominance was rewarded on the half-hour mark when Joseph Hungbo's cross was volleyed home by Murray on his debut. Northampton responded as Cameron McGeehan headed against the outside of the post, but they could not find a way level.
