Nottingham Forest twice led away at Anfield before Víctor Muñoz's 81st-minute equaliser earned Liverpool a 2-2 draw, the first home league game of Andoni Iraola's time in charge. Dan Ndoye put the visitors ahead in the 23rd minute, finishing low past Alisson after Matz Sels's long clearance was held up by Igor Jesus and rolled on by Morgan Gibbs-White. Liverpool had a Florian Wirtz finish disallowed for Jeremie Frimpong's offside in the build-up, and Alisson was called into a smart save from Igor Jesus just before half-time to keep it at 1-0.
Alexander Isak levelled in the 59th minute, turning home from close range after Cody Gakpo spun away from two defenders and picked him out at the back post. Forest regained the lead ten minutes later in contentious circumstances: with Liverpool trying to make a triple substitution, a malfunctioning electronic board left the fourth official unable to signal the change through three separate stoppages, and in the confusion a quick throw-in from substitute Liam Delap sent Neco Williams clear behind the Liverpool defence. Williams was fouled by Alisson, and Morgan Gibbs-White converted the resulting penalty in the 69th minute.
Muñoz, who signed from Osasuna in the summer, marked his Anfield debut with the equaliser in the 81st minute. It was Iraola's second draw from his opening two league games in charge, following a 2-2 at Newcastle United on the opening weekend, as he continues the task of replacing Arne Slot.
Iraola said afterwards he could not explain the delay to his substitutions. "I can't explain because I don't have an explanation," he said. "The penalty, I leave you to decide if it's a penalty or not." He was equally critical of his side's first-half display: "In the first half we were too passive without the ball."
