Queens Park Rangers climbed into the Championship play-off places in the most dramatic fashion as a 19-year-old substitute, Kieran Morgan, smashed in a 96th-minute winner to edge a 2-1 victory over Birmingham City. Jimmy Dunne's first-half header looked set to be enough for the hosts until Patrick Roberts struck in the third minute of stoppage time, only for Morgan to restore QPR's lead with virtually the last kick of the game.
The scoreline barely reflected QPR's control. Julien Stephan's side registered 16 shots to Birmingham's three and created the game's clearest chances, yet almost paid heavily for their wastefulness as the visitors, largely toothless for long spells, rallied late on. In the end, the contest became an emotional rollercoaster, with Rangers' fourth win in five lifting them to sixth and consigning Blues to a seventh away league defeat of the season and a slide to 10th place.
QPR find their rhythm after early scares
QPR, missing influential Moroccan playmaker Ilias Chair through injury, were the first to threaten. Rhys Norrington-Davies cut inside from the left and curled a right-footed effort from the edge of the area that drifted just wide, a warning of the problems the visitors would cause down the flanks. Birmingham, promoted back to the second tier last season, responded with a rare moment of incision when Jay Stansfield slipped Demarai Gray in behind. Gray drove into the box and whipped a low cross across the face of goal, but it flashed just beyond the outstretched boot of Marvin Ducksch.
