Manchester City’s faltering title defence suffered another setback as Kaoru Mitoma’s precise second-half strike earned Brighton & Hove Albion a deserved 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium, cancelling out Erling Haaland’s landmark penalty and consigning Pep Guardiola’s side to a third successive draw. The result leaves Arsenal five points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand.
With just 14 fit senior outfield players and a makeshift back line, City looked leggy and short of their usual fluency, while Brighton combined disciplined defending with incisive counterattacks to repeatedly trouble Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal. City created enough to win, with Opta logging four big chances and an expected-goals total of 2.38 from 22 efforts, but wasteful finishing and moments of slack defending meant they once again failed to turn dominance into victory.
If the first half belonged to City’s patient pressure against a deep-lying Brighton rearguard, the second was defined by Mitoma’s equaliser and a breathless exchange of chances at both ends. By the final whistle it felt like two points dropped for the champions but a richly earned reward for Fabian Hürzeler’s side, who might easily have left Manchester with all three. Arsenal, watching on, now have the opportunity to extend their advantage to eight points when they host Liverpool later in the week.
