Miller's late strike sinks Newport and tightens the relegation noose

· Match Report

Cheltenham Town claimed a 1-0 win over Newport County at Whaddon Road as George Miller's 82nd-minute finish settled a tense League Two encounter and left the visitors' survival hopes hanging by a thread.

The result, set against Barrow's earlier 3-1 home defeat to Walsall, kept Newport just one point above the bottom two with only two games left. The Robins, already safe, moved up to 17th courtesy of a third successive victory.

Crossbar punishes the Exiles' early charge

Christian Fuchs's message to push Cheltenham early was taken on board, with midfielder Sven Sprangler firing twice wide inside the opening seven minutes. The visitors' pressure persisted but the woodwork would deny them on two notable occasions.
