Aston Villa booked their place in the Europa League quarter-finals with a composed 2-0 win over Lille at Villa Park, completing a 3-0 aggregate victory and setting up a last-eight meeting with Bologna.
Second-half goals from captain John McGinn and substitute Leon Bailey finished off the French side after a cagey first leg in which Ollie Watkins' goal had given Unai Emery's team their platform. Bologna progressed by beating Serie A rivals Roma 4-3 in extra time, 5-4 on aggregate.
A Tepid Beginning at Villa Park
Villa had celebrated Emery's 100 wins in charge with a pre-match display and started brightly, but a breakthrough proved elusive. Tammy Abraham and Amadou Onana both forced Berke Ozer into smart stops, the goalkeeper palming away Onana's header only for Jadon Sancho to dither when the ball dropped invitingly.
