McCleary header completes Gillingham's late comeback against spirited Newport

· Match Report

Gillingham twice came from behind before substitute Gareth McCleary headed home a stoppage-time winner to secure a 3-2 League Two victory over bottom side Newport County at Priestfield.

The result ended a 10-game wait for a Gillingham win and denied Newport the chance to move out of the relegation zone, with the visitors having taken the lead twice only to be caught by the hosts deep into added time.

Newport Strike Early

Newport made a bright start that belied their position in the bottom two and nearly took an early lead through debutant Harrison Biggins, who was denied by Glenn Morris. From the resulting corner, Ryan Delaney's header was clawed away by Morris but Michael Spellman reacted first to guide a header over the goalkeeper and into the net after four minutes.
