For Stoke, it was only a second league victory in seven matches after a promising start to the season, while Portsmouth's slide continued with just one win in their last eight league games. Stoke Dominate a Scrappy First Half but Fail to Capitalise
Stoke, who made seven changes after their defeat at Millwall, started with far greater intent than their hosts. Promotion hopefuls, they were on the front foot immediately, forcing two quick corners inside the first three minutes and pinning Portsmouth back. The first clear opening arrived in the seventh minute when Aaron Cresswell swung in a teasing cross from the left and Divin Mubama rose highest, only to direct his header narrowly past the post.
