Jean-Philippe Mateta has spent the past year arguing that the final season of his Crystal Palace contract should not exist. It is still standing. A Premier League commission heard the case last season and Fifa declined to hear it at all. He started the opening match at Everton anyway, and he now has ten months left, one week of the transfer window, and a date in January that makes waiting the most valuable thing he can do.
What he was arguing
Mateta arrived at Selhurst Park from Mainz 05 in 2021, initially on an 18-month loan, and signed a four-and-a-half-year contract when the move was made permanent in January 2022. That deal carried the option of a 12-month extension, which Palace activated in 2024. The option year is the year in dispute: Mateta and his advisers contend it is not legally binding.
The matter reached the Premier League's Player Related Dispute Commission last season. The outcome has never been confirmed publicly, but Mateta remains contracted to Palace, which is the answer in practice. Days before the Everton game, Fifa ruled the dispute was outside its jurisdiction. From the club's side it is closed.
