Coventry City stretched their lead at the top of the Championship to eight points with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Swansea City, secured by Ephron Mason-Clark's emphatic strike a minute before half-time. The result delivered an eighth successive home league win and a ninth home Championship success of the season for Frank Lampard's side, while condemning Swansea to a fifth consecutive away defeat.
Although the usually free-scoring Sky Blues had to work hard and were relieved by some wasteful Swansea finishing, they ultimately did just enough to protect Carl Rushworth's clean sheet and maintain an unbeaten home record. Victory, coupled with Middlesbrough being held by Blackburn Rovers, leaves Coventry 13 points clear of third place at the midway point in the season as they pursue a long-awaited return to the Premier League after 25 seasons away, while Swansea's defeat drops them to 20th, four points above the relegation zone.
Swansea's bright start undone by long-throw routine
Having dropped points on recent trips to Ipswich, Preston and Southampton, Coventry were glad to be back at the CBS Arena but it was Swansea who settled quicker. Eom Ji-sung had an early effort comfortably saved by Rushworth before the home goalkeeper had to block a dangerous cross from the same player, and Zan Vipotnik saw a shot ricochet over the bar off Liam Kitching after nine minutes as the visitors' front-foot approach unsettled the league leaders.
