Sheffield United beat Mansfield Town 3-0 at One Call Stadium to reach the third round of the League Cup. Patrick Bamford put the visitors ahead inside three minutes to open the scoring. Sheffield United went on to have the better of the chances, with 20 attempts on goal to Mansfield's seven and four shots on target to two, despite the sides sharing possession almost evenly, 50% to 50%.
Mark McGuinness doubled Sheffield United's lead in the 70th minute before Callum O'Hare completed the scoring in the 88th. Three players were booked: Sheffield United's Femi Seriki in the 36th minute, Mansfield's Louis Reed in the 62nd and Mansfield substitute Liam Thompson in the 86th. Neither side had a player sent off.
Bamford, the scorer of the opener, was withdrawn for Ryan Oné in the 69th minute as Sheffield United made wholesale second-half changes; Seriki followed him off injured in the 83rd, replaced by Matt Doherty. Mansfield had already turned to their bench at half-time and twice more in the 59th minute.
The result ends Mansfield Town's involvement in this season's League Cup and sends Sheffield United through to round three.
