Manchester United drew 1-1 with the European champions, Paris Saint-Germain, in a pre-season friendly in Gothenburg on Saturday, a result overshadowed by an injury to Mason Mount. The England midfielder was forced off after fewer than 20 minutes with an apparent foot injury, replaced by Tyler Fletcher.
PSG had taken the lead inside two minutes through Ibrahim Mbaye, who swept home from close range as the French side, missing many of their leading players, made the worst possible start for United. Bryan Mbeumo levelled in the 32nd minute, finishing low with his left foot after Amad Diallo won the ball back and picked him out.
United suffered a second injury concern early in the second half when the goalkeeper, Tom Heaton, 40, went off with a right hamstring problem after rushing out to make a clearance, with no other recognised senior goalkeeper available and Dermot Mee coming on in his place. There were late chances for Fletcher, Shea Lacey and the captain, Bruno Fernandes, who linked up well with the new arrival Youri Tielemans, handed his United debut from the bench, in an encouraging sign for the manager, Michael Carrick.
"I enjoyed it," Carrick told MUTV, United's in-house television station. "Good challenge. Slightly different with the way they play. We should've scored more goals." He added: "It's good for the boys sometimes to have to problem-solve and find their own way and I thought we did that. That prepares them for the season as well."
