Everton salvaged a 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Hill Dickinson Stadium thanks to a 25-yard strike from the debutant Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the 95th minute. United had led twice, through Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, and looked to have won it when Sesko headed them back in front in the 87th minute.
Maitland-Niles, a deadline-day signing from Lyon, had come on in the 76th minute for James Garner, who had pulled up with cramp. Tyrique George had levelled for Everton in the 82nd minute, and the late rescue kept David Moyes's side unbeaten after three league games at the end of a difficult deadline day.
Michael Carrick, the United manager, said afterwards: “It hurts as we came here to win and we put ourselves in a good position.” His side have now conceded twice in each of their opening three league games.
