Kobbie Mainoo celebrated his new contract by scoring the goal that swept Manchester United back into the Champions League as they edged a five-goal thriller against Liverpool 3-2 at Old Trafford. The academy graduate's 77th-minute winner settled an epic Premier League encounter and confirmed United's return to Europe's elite club competition after a two-year absence.
United led 2-0 at the break thanks to early goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, only for Liverpool to turn the contest on its head immediately after half-time as Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo capitalised on errors to level. In a frenzied finish, Liverpool failed to clear Luke Shaw's cross and the ball fell kindly for Mainoo on the edge of the area, where he crashed a first-time effort into the bottom corner.
Red Devils Roar Out of the Blocks
The eagerly anticipated meeting pitted the third-placed team in the Premier League standings against the side directly below them, and it was the hosts who tore out of the traps. Cunha, back in the lineup after a hip complaint, saw an initial effort from a half-cleared corner blocked but managed to get another shot away, striking into the ground and off Alexis Mac Allister to spark bedlam in the sixth minute.
