Alexis Mac Allister said ahead of the game that he was disappointed Liverpool had not offered him a new contract. Then he answered on the pitch, driving in the winning goal from 20 yards in the 49th minute of a 2-1 Champions League win over Atlético Madrid at Anfield.
Marcos Llorente had put Atlético ahead in the 16th minute and Dominik Szoboszlai levelled in the 39th, before Mac Allister's left-footed strike settled a contest Liverpool had started badly. The result stretched Atlético's winless run against English opposition in the Champions League league phase to 11 matches.
It was a first Champions League match as head coach for Andoni Iraola, and his first win over Diego Simeone in any competition, having lost three times and drawn once against him.
