Portsmouth beat Lincoln City 3-1 at Sincil Bank on Saturday, condemning the newly promoted Imps to defeat in their first Championship home game since 1961 and a second straight loss to open the season.
Ryan Kavuma-McQueen put Portsmouth ahead after six minutes and Adrian Segecic doubled the lead nine minutes later. Reeco Hackett pulled a goal back from the penalty spot in the 31st minute, the only reply Lincoln could muster before the break. Ebou Adams, on for Rocco Shein in the 57th minute, settled it with a 25-yard strike in the 68th minute. Freddie Draper was booked in the 33rd minute for Lincoln, one of four yellow cards in the match.
Portsmouth had the better of the ball, with 61% possession to Lincoln's 39%, and were the sharper side in front of goal, putting seven of 13 attempts on target to Lincoln's four from 15.
It was Lincoln's first home league match in the second tier since a 2-0 win over Leyton Orient in 1961, played in front of a crowd of 10,545, the ground's biggest attendance in more than 40 years, after a summer in which the club spent £10m redeveloping the stadium with a new fan village and upgraded stands. Joint head coach Tom Shaw, who took over during the summer alongside Chris Cohen, said the defeat had underlined the step up in quality at this level.
