Arne Slot's 100th game in charge of Liverpool ended in defeat as Galatasaray established a narrow Champions League last-16 lead to take to Anfield next week, Mario Lemina's seventh-minute header settling a frantic night at the Ali Sami Yen.
It was the same scoreline by which the Turkish champions had beaten Liverpool in the league phase back in September, and once again it was a tale of familiar shortcomings for the visitors: vulnerability from set-pieces, mistakes at the back and a misfiring forward line. The tie is salvageable, but Slot's side will have to come from behind to reach the quarter-finals when the teams reconvene on 18 March.
Set-piece sucker punch
Liverpool should arguably have been ahead before they fell behind. Florian Wirtz fired narrowly wide after an error by home goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, with Galatasaray looking distinctly anxious in the opening exchanges and repeatedly giving the ball away around their own box.
