Leeds survive Birmingham scare to reach FA Cup fifth round on penalties

— Match Report

Leeds United edged into the FA Cup fifth round for the third time in four years after beating Birmingham City 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw across 120 minutes at St Andrew's. Sean Longstaff converted the decisive spot-kick after goalkeeper Lucas Perri had denied Tommy Doyle and Patrick Roberts blazed his effort over the crossbar.

Lukas Nmecha's second-half strike looked to have sent Daniel Farke's Premier League side through, but substitute Roberts hauled the Championship hosts level a minute from time with a deflected left-foot rocket that took the tie to extra time and ultimately spot-kicks.

Blues set the tone in a storming first half

Both managers made six changes from their midweek league action, but it was Chris Davies's Birmingham side who dictated the opening exchanges, bossing possession and chances against their top-flight visitors. Jay Stansfield's rasping half-volley demanded a superb finger-tip save from Perri to tip it on to the post, with the Brazilian also denying Jhon Solis, Kai Wagner and a Christoph Klarer header in a one-sided opening 20 minutes.
