Leeds United beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 at the City Ground on Tuesday to book their place in the Carabao Cup third round, a second win at the ground in three days after Anton Stach's 87th-minute free-kick had settled Saturday's Premier League opener 1-0. It capped a difficult first week in charge for new Forest head coach Oliver Glasner, with things yet to click for his side.
Forest created the better early chances. Ola Aina's cross-shot forced a smart stop from Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford inside ten minutes, and James Justin had to intervene to keep out Igor Jesus's header. Leeds also had openings: Daniel James worked into space on the right but pulled the ball back behind Sean Longstaff, who shot straight at Matz Sels, while Joe Rodon's last-ditch challenge denied Chris Wood and Sels kept out a low effort from James at the other end.
Leeds struck early in the second half: a misdirected clearing header from Aina let Longstaff away, and he found James, who clipped the ball past Sels in the 49th minute. Kalimuendo almost pulled Forest level moments later, teeing up Wood, only for Trafford to save smartly; Okafor then shot just wide as Leeds broke again. James Justin wrapped up the win in the 74th minute, turning in the rebound after Neco Williams could only block Nmecha's effort on the line.
Forest's business off the pitch continued regardless of the result: a £45 million ($61m) deal was agreed with Chelsea for striker Liam Delap as Glasner looks to strengthen a squad still finding its feet under him.
