Leandro Paredes banned for 10 matches by FIFA over World Cup final brawl

FIFA's disciplinary committee has banned Leandro Paredes for 10 matches over his part in the brawl that followed Argentina's World Cup final defeat by Spain, while separately fining Argentina's football association over the Falklands banner displayed after their semi-final win against England.

Paredes was shown a red card for violent conduct after the final whistle in New York/New Jersey, grabbing Spain's Eric García by the throat before pushing Gavi to the ground as the confrontation spread into wider scuffles involving other players. It is understood he was also fined $90,000.

Nahuel Molina, who tried to knock over Spain captain Rodri as he ran past following the final whistle, was given a seven-match ban and fined $90,000. Thiago Almada and Spain's Gavi were each given a one-match ban and fined $30,000, and Argentina coach Roberto Ayala was banned for three matches and fined $30,000, after appearing to aim a punch at Dani Olmo during the melee.

It is not the first time a political gesture around a Spain fixture has drawn continental sanction: Rodri and Álvaro Morata were banned by UEFA after singing about Spain's claims to Gibraltar following their Euro 2024 triumph.
