Borussia Dortmund began their Champions League campaign with a 3-2 home win over Villarreal on 8 September 2026, Serhou Guirassy scoring twice in five minutes late on after the visitors had pulled level. Renato Veiga's own goal put Dortmund ahead in the 52nd minute, Santiago Mouriño equalised in the 65th, and Guirassy struck in the 79th and 84th.
Guirassy also put through his own net in the 92nd minute to give Villarreal a way back, but Dortmund held on. It was his 100th appearance for the club, and his penalty was his 64th Dortmund goal. Only Erling Haaland has been more productive in the competition over that spell: since the 2024-25 season began, Guirassy has a hand in 26 goals across 25 Champions League appearances.
Villarreal Waste Their Chances
Villarreal went goalless in all four of their away Champions League games last season, and for long spells here that run looked set to continue. Georges Mikautadze mishit a close-range chance and Tajon Buchanan tested Gregor Kobel, but the visitors went in level and without a goal to show for their openings.
