Ipswich Town had to wait until the final quarter of the game before beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Hillsborough, where Ivan Azon broke the deadlock in the 78th minute and Jack Clarke added a penalty three minutes later. The result moved Kieran McKenna's side up to third, above Millwall and within two points of Middlesbrough in the second automatic promotion place, with a game in hand.
The scoreline only told part of the story. Wednesday, already relegated, made the promotion hopefuls work hard for everything and looked capable of collecting a first home point of 2026 before their resistance was broken. Henrik Pedersen's side defended with discipline, had their own moments through Sean Fusire and Jerry Yates, and stayed in the contest until a sharp late swing decided it.
Charles keeps the contest level as Ipswich start strongly
The visitors began on the front foot and Pierce Charles was quickly drawn into the action. Clarke and George Hirst both had efforts on goal, while Anis Mehmeti forced the strongest early save when he twisted inside the box to carve out a shooting chance. Charles also dealt with a strike from outside the area by Dan Neil as Ipswich tried to turn early possession into a lead.
