Derby County had to come from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against relegation-battling Portsmouth at Pride Park, as an early piece of quality from Callum Lang was cancelled out by a Hayden Matthews own goal on the stroke of half-time. Despite dominating large spells of the contest and fashioning the clearer chances in the closing stages, the Rams could not find a winner, denied at the death by an outstanding save from visiting goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid.
For Portsmouth, it was a familiar away-day story. An excellent start and a rare clinical moment on the road promised the possibility of only a second Championship away win of the season, but their attacking threat faded quickly and they were left clinging on to preserve a point. The draw extends Pompey’s winless run away from home since the opening day, but it does edge them two points clear of the relegation zone. Derby, meanwhile, remain four points adrift of the play-off places and have now gone four home matches without a victory, adding to the sense of frustration in their promotion push.
Murphy and Lang combine as Pompey strike with their first attack
The match could hardly have started better for Portsmouth. With just six minutes played, skipper Josh Murphy broke away purposefully up the left, exploiting the space behind Derby’s back line. Spotting Lang making a supporting run, he slipped the ball into the forward’s path. Lang showed impressive composure, holding off challenges as he drove infield before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike from around 12 yards that arrowed into the corner. It was a finish of real conviction and immediately quietened the home crowd.
