Holders Newcastle United began the defence of their Carabao Cup with a comfortable 4-1 victory over League One leaders Bradford City at St James' Park, with Joelinton and William Osula both scoring twice to send Eddie Howe's side into a fourth-round meeting with Tottenham Hotspur.
It was 192 days since Newcastle ended a 70-year wait for major domestic silverware by beating Liverpool at Wembley, and Howe took the third-round tie seriously, making seven changes from the weekend while still fielding the likes of Sven Botman, Malick Thiaw, Lewis Hall, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon in front of a near sell-out crowd.
Two-minute burst settles early nerves
Bradford had begun brightly, disrupting Newcastle's one- and two-touch passing rhythm, with Aaron Ramsdale forced to save a deflected Bobby Pointon effort on his Newcastle debut. The hosts seized control in the 17th minute when Gordon's shot was blocked and Joelinton pounced on the loose ball inside the area, his low finish ending a nine-month goal drought.
