Ipswich Town recovered from an alarming start to beat Charlton Athletic 2-1 and move back into second place in the Championship. Kieran McKenna's side were behind inside 42 seconds at The Valley, but they regrouped through Darnell Furlong's first goal for the club and a Jaden Philogene penalty to keep their automatic promotion bid firmly in their own hands.
Charlton made eight changes after their 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday, and Nathan Jones saw that reshaped side make an instant impact when captain Greg Docherty struck from close range. Yet Ipswich gradually imposed themselves, levelled before the break, and then saw out the second half to go back above Millwall on goal difference with a game in hand, while Charlton remained short of the point that would guarantee safety.
Charlton strike before the contest has settled
The home side could hardly have asked for a more dramatic opening. Ben Johnson's mistake let Tyreece Campbell surge down the right, and although Christian Walton pushed away Campbell's angled drive, the rebound dropped kindly for Docherty to hammer into an empty net.
