Hull City beat Stoke City 5-4 on penalties at the bet365 Stadium after 90 minutes ended level, eliminating the hosts from the League Cup and sending Hull through to the next round.
Róbert Bozeník put Stoke ahead in the 38th minute, but Hull levelled through Kieran Dowell's 44th-minute strike and the sides went in level at the break. The score stayed at 1-1 through to full time.
Both sides scored their first three spot-kicks in the shootout before Stoke substitute George Hirst, on since the 62nd minute for Bozeník, had his effort saved. Hull did not miss: Mohamed Belloumi converted their fifth penalty to complete a 5-4 win.
Hull's Lucas Herrington and Stoke's Hirst were both booked in the closing stages of normal time, Herrington in the 81st minute and Hirst in the 94th, shortly before his missed penalty. Stoke used all five of their substitutes after half-time; Hull made five changes of their own, the last pair arriving in the 80th minute.
