Nottingham Forest survived a serious scare from Fenerbahce to book their place in the Europa League last 16, losing 2-1 at the City Ground on the night but advancing 4-2 on aggregate after their 3-0 first-leg win in Istanbul.
For 67 minutes Vitor Pereira's much-changed side were at risk of matching an unwanted record: only one team in the history of European club competitions has lost the first leg of a tie by a three-goal margin at home and still advanced. In the directors' box, Evangelos Marinakis was a reminder of Olympiakos's 4-1 home defeat by Maccabi Tel Aviv two years ago, before they triumphed 6-1 in Serbia.
Flares, Counterattacks and an Early Setback
The game was paused for a couple of minutes within 30 seconds of kick-off after flares were thrown on to the pitch by the Fenerbahce supporters. When it settled, Forest looked disjointed. Murillo, the scorer in Istanbul, was uncomfortable shunted across to left-back, while fellow Brazilians Morato and Jair Cunha did little to inspire confidence at centre-back.
