Huddersfield stun Sunderland on penalties to reach Carabao Cup third round

— Match Report

League One Huddersfield knocked Premier League Sunderland out of the Carabao Cup, winning 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light. Milan Aleksic's spot-kick was saved by Lee Nicholls in sudden death to send the Terriers into the third round for the first time since 2017-18.

Leo Castledine had put the visitors ahead with a spectacular ninth-minute volley before Marc Guiu's late header forced extra penalties. Both teams converted their first five attempts before Nicholls became the hero, tipping Aleksic's effort round the post after David Kasumu had put Huddersfield 6-5 up.

Both managers made wholesale changes. Regis Le Bris fielded an entirely different starting XI from the side beaten 2-0 at Burnley on Saturday, while Huddersfield manager Lee Grant made 10 changes from the win over Stevenage, with Murray Wallace the only survivor and former Black Cat Lynden Gooch captaining the team.
