Derek McInnes lost his home debut as Rangers manager on Sunday, and he lost it in the manner that will worry him most. Hibernian went ahead early through a Josh Campbell penalty, awarded after the video assistant referee flagged a foul on Jason Kerr by Vanja Dragojevic, who was making his first Rangers start since signing from Partizan Belgrade. It was the visitors' first shot of the match. Rangers pushed for the rest of the afternoon and looked to have rescued it in the 85th minute when the Hibs defender Miguel Chaiwa turned the ball past his own goalkeeper, Raphael Sallinger. Then, in the third minute of added time, the substitute Callum Wright guided a shot into the far corner.
It is three matches in the Ibrox job for McInnes and no wins in any of them. Celtic and St Mirren both have six points from two league games; Rangers have one. Hibernian, who had won two of their previous three league visits to Ibrox, have now made it three of four.
The afternoon cost Rangers more than points. Youssef Chermiti, whose signature the club protected this summer by rejecting a reported £22m bid from Galatasaray that would have been a club-record sale, was carried off on a stretcher before the break. "He'll get a scan tomorrow," McInnes said afterwards. "He'll leave here today in a boot and a brace. It's a knee injury of some sort but I think it would be silly to speculate anything until we get the scan results tomorrow."
On the game itself he was unrepentant. "We're not as bad as some people will be saying at the minute," he said. "I think it's important that we just batten down the hatches, stay strong, stay together." He also disputed the penalty, saying he had watched it back and did not think it was one.
