Kai Havertz came off the bench to score a 91st-minute winner as Arsenal beat Sporting 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final in Lisbon, giving the Premier League leaders a slender advantage to take into next week's return at the Emirates.
The German substitute calmly slotted home from fellow substitute Gabriel Martinelli's cross in the first minute of injury time, settling a cagey contest that had been heading for a goalless draw and ending Arsenal's run of back-to-back defeats for the first time this season.
Raya's early intervention sets the tone
Sporting started brightly and almost took the lead inside six minutes when Ousmane Diomande split the Arsenal defence with a superb pass and Maxi Araujo cracked the loose ball goalwards. David Raya produced a brilliant fingertip save to divert the piledriver onto the crossbar, a world-class intervention that kept the Gunners level.
