Plymouth Argyle beat Devon rivals Exeter City 2-0 in the Carabao Cup first round at Home Park, both goals arriving in second-half stoppage time after Exeter had been reduced to 10 men.
Alex Hartridge broke the deadlock in the 91st minute, converting a Harvey White assist, before Aribim Pepple doubled the lead two minutes later from a Freddie Issaka pass.
Exeter's night had already turned when Ethan Sutherland was sent off in the 86th minute for a second yellow card, having first been booked in the 77th. Charlie Cummins was cautioned in the first half and Jack Bycroft picked up a late yellow for dissent as the game slipped away from the visitors.
Hartridge was making his Argyle debut against the club where he had spent an eight-year first-team career, including a loan spell back there in the second half of the 2024-25 season. He scored despite what he said was abuse from a section of the Exeter support, including a lighter thrown in his direction and a chant referencing his family. "I think it's pretty clear that that went too far," he said.
