Hayden Hackney's spectacular first-half strike earned Middlesbrough a 1-0 win over Norwich City on Teesside, extending Kim Hellberg's promotion juggernaut to five successive victories in all competitions. The Boro captain curled home from distance in the 17th minute, and although Norwich arrived on the back of four straight wins of their own, they could not find a way past a disciplined home defence.
Norwich contributed fully to an open and entertaining contest, forcing Sol Brynn into a pair of important early saves and carving out two excellent late chances through Jovon Makama. Yet Boro's aggressive high press, slick one-touch passing and some outstanding covering tackles, notably from Ruairi McConville and substitute Dael Fry, ultimately preserved Hackney's early masterpiece.
High press and early ambition set the tone
Both teams came into the game in outstanding form and it showed from the opening exchanges. Middlesbrough immediately set about imposing Hellberg's high-pressing blueprint, with Hackney almost making an instant impact when his second-minute strike was kept out by Vladan Kovacevic. The early effort underlined Boro's intent to test Norwich's goalkeeper from distance and to capitalise on any hesitation at the back.
