Erling Haaland's 59th-minute goal gave ten-man Manchester City a 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, in a derby remembered as much for two contentious refereeing decisions as for anything on the pitch.
Phil Foden had been sent off in the 22nd minute, and United, who finished with 55 per cent of the possession and 16 shots to City's six, hit the woodwork twice without finding a way through. Pro Ref, the officials' body, later admitted that Haaland's winner should not have been allowed to stand.
The result gave City maximum points from their opening four league games under Enzo Maresca, while Michael Carrick's United have four points from their first four.
