Haaland's 300th club goal sees City past Coventry as Fernández impresses on debut

· Match Report

Manchester City needed only Erling Haaland's 25th-minute header, his 300th goal in club football, to beat newly promoted Coventry City 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday and make it three wins from three in the Premier League. Enzo Fernández, signed on deadline day, was in the starting line-up only because Nico O’Reilly was hurt in the warm-up, and he helped create the goal on his debut.

Haaland's goal, his third in as many league games this season, came from a Semenyo cross after Fernández had played the ball in behind. Coventry, who have now lost all three of their Premier League matches since returning to the top flight, are still without a goal of the season, and City were made to hang on as Frank Lampard's side pressed late.

“Today was not a nice win, a bit ugly,” City manager Enzo Maresca said afterwards, adding that his side deserved more than the one goal they scored in the first half.
