Newcastle United survived a ferocious Burnley fightback to claim a rare away win, eventually prevailing 3-1 at Turf Moor thanks to Bruno Guimaraes' stoppage-time strike. Eddie Howe's side looked to be cruising when Joelinton and Yoane Wissa struck inside the opening seven minutes, but Josh Laurent's volley before the break transformed the mood and set up an anxious, end-to-end contest. Burnley then dominated long spells of the second half, repeatedly threatening an equaliser, only for Nick Pope and some desperate Newcastle defending to keep them at bay.
In the end it took a defensive mix-up between Hjalmar Ekdal and Martin Dubravka deep into added time to give Guimaraes the chance to settle it from distance and secure just Newcastle's second away league victory of the season, and their first on the road since beating Everton 4-1 in November. For Burnley, winless in 10 Premier League games and now six points adrift of safety, this was a familiar story of fine margins and missed moments, despite a performance Scott Parker felt showed "something in this group that is elite."
Flying start leaves Burnley shell-shocked
Scott Parker's final instructions had barely left his players' ears when Newcastle silenced Turf Moor. With just 65 seconds played Anthony Gordon was afforded time and space down the left and at the second attempt the winger made amends for his Boxing Day wastefulness at Old Trafford, driving a low cross into the box. Joelinton, stealing in front of centre-back Hjalmar Ekdal, applied a deft, hooked finish for his first Premier League goal in a year and Newcastle's travelling woes suddenly looked a distant memory.
