League Two Grimsby Town produced one of the great English cup shocks as they knocked Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup second round, winning a marathon penalty shootout 12-11 at Blundell Park after the tie finished 2-2. Bryan Mbeumo's second spot-kick crashed against Christy Pym's bar to send the Mariners through and trigger a delirious pitch invasion.
It is the first time Manchester United have ever lost to a fourth-tier side, and it was achieved against a club that has endured two relegations to the National League in the last decade and a half. Ruben Amorim's team had clawed their way back from 2-0 down through Mbeumo and a stoppage-time Harry Maguire header, only to capitulate from twelve yards.
Onana errors hand Grimsby a two-goal cushion
Andre Onana, making his first appearance of the season after being left out of United's opening two Premier League games, was at fault for both Grimsby goals. On 22 minutes Amad Diallo and Manuel Ugarte collided under pressure from Kieran Green, Darragh Burns swept the ball wide to Charles Vernam, and the forward beat the Cameroonian at his near post.
