Charlton Athletic beat Preston North End 1-0 at The Valley in front of 17,256, extending their winning start to the Championship season to three matches from three.
Karlan Grant scored the game's only goal in the 55th minute, converting a pass from Millenic Alli, who had come on as a half-time substitute for Sonny Carey.
Charlton dominated the underlying numbers: 57% possession, 15 shots to Preston's 12 (two on target to one), and seven corners won to Preston's four, while committing far fewer fouls (11 to 21). Two yellow cards were shown, Preston's Leo Leroy in the 53rd minute and Charlton's Joe Rankin-Costello deep into stoppage time, with no red cards on the day.
Both sides made wholesale late changes: Charlton used five substitutes, including Grant himself making way in the 92nd minute after his goal, while Preston brought on four, Stanley Mills and Jusef Erabi both introduced in the 69th minute.
