Chelsea began with intent and should have taken an early lead. Wesley Fofana climbed to meet a corner but could only direct his header onto the roof of the net, before captain Reece James, celebrating a new six-year contract, lashed an ambitious effort high into the Shed End upper tier. Cole Palmer found promising pockets of space, steering one effort wide from Malo Gusto's clever reverse pass, and an Enzo Fernández drive cannoned into Palmer inside the box, underlining Chelsea's early territorial control.
