Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon fired Newcastle United to an emphatic 3-0 victory over Jose Mourinho's Benfica at St James' Park, lifting Eddie Howe's side to back-to-back Champions League wins for the first time since 2003.
Gordon broke the deadlock in the first half, before substitute Barnes struck twice late on to settle a contest that had been delicately poised for much of the evening. Benfica, who had the better of the early chances, were left without a point in the competition.
Benfica Bright but Pope Stands Firm
Mourinho had instructed his side to slow Newcastle down and disrupt their passing rhythm, and the visitors started impressively in the north east. Dodi Lukebakio went closest, first testing Nick Pope with a tremendous shot that the goalkeeper turned away one-handed, then striking the outside of the post with a whipped effort from outside the box.
