Gillingham Set Club Record With Comeback Win at Newport

· Match Report

Gillingham came from a goal down to beat Newport County 3-1 at Rodney Parade, setting a club record of 21 league games without defeat. Having levelled their previous record set back in the 1973-74 campaign, the visitors saw hopes of breaking it take an early blow when Nathaniel Opoku put County ahead in the opening minute.

Newport, who had won six straight games against Gillingham, should have doubled their lead but were pegged back and overtaken before half time. Victory sent Gillingham top of League Two after Swindon's defeat at Salford, while Newport remained without a win in seven and outside the relegation zone on goal difference.

A Flying Start Goes to Waste

The hosts were ahead after just 26 seconds, Nathan Opoku heading in Bobby Kamwa's cross straight from kick-off. It could have been 2-0 on nine minutes when Cameron Antwi was fouled in the box by Andy Smith, but Glenn Morris saved the Newport midfielder's penalty before the rebound was put wide.
