Walsall opened their League Two campaign with a 3-0 win away at Gillingham at Priestfield Stadium on 15 August, breaking the deadlock only in the final quarter of the game. Isaac Moore, on as a 59th-minute substitute for Charlie Crew, put Walsall ahead in the 80th minute. Captain James Connolly doubled the lead in the 88th minute, and Aaron Pressley completed the scoring in the 95th minute of stoppage time.
Gillingham had the better shooting accuracy, seven shots on target to Walsall's five from an even 18 attempts apiece, but could not convert that pressure into a goal. Walsall held the larger share of possession, 56% to 44%.
Six yellow cards were shown and no player was sent off. Elicha Ahui was the first booked, cautioned for dissent in the 11th minute; Andy Smith, Kadeem Harris, Charlie Crew, Robbie McKenzie and Ronan Hale were all shown yellow for fouls or failing to retreat across the rest of the match. It was the opening league fixture of the season for both clubs.
