George Campbell's 26th-minute header gave West Bromwich Albion a 1-0 win over Bristol City in a game that meant far more to the visitors. The goal, powered in at the far post from Callum Styles' right-wing corner, strengthened Albion's survival bid and left the home crowd to reflect on a season whose promise has drained away.
Albion were the hungrier side in a low-quality first half and, after taking the lead, defended it with few alarms. Bristol City tried to change the pattern with three half-time substitutions, but the best of the later chances still fell to West Brom, while home frustration spilled into boos and chants of "sack the board" before a jubilant away celebration at the final whistle.
Campbell turns Albion pressure into reward
The visitors showed their intent early when Josh Maja sent a low shot narrowly wide in the fourth minute. Adam Randell replied with an effort from distance for City, but the home side struggled to play with any real tempo and too often seemed content to send hopeful balls in the direction of Emil Riis.
