Gallagher volley completes Stoke comeback against Sheffield United

· Match Report

Stoke City came from behind to beat Sheffield United 2-1 at the bet365 Stadium on 19 September 2026, with two goals in eight minutes turning a game that had been goalless until the 50th minute. Jack McGlynn levelled in the 77th minute and substitute Sam Gallagher won it with a volley in the 85th.

Kalvin Phillips had put the visitors ahead in the 50th minute, bending a free-kick past Viktor Johansson for his first league goal in more than five years. The result extended Stoke's unbeaten run in the Championship to five matches and left Sheffield United with a third successive defeat in all competitions.

Phillips Strikes First

Stoke began the brighter side and were the more threatening in the first half, though neither Djibril Soumare, Lamine Cisse nor Ben Johnson could beat Michael Cooper in the Sheffield United goal. The home crowd observed a minute's applause before kick-off, and the players wore black armbands, in tribute to the former Stoke forward Harry Burrows, who died earlier in September aged 85.
