Jay Fulton stepped off the bench and into the spotlight with a spectacular 25-yard strike as Swansea City edged West Bromwich Albion 1-0, continuing their climb away from Championship trouble and deepening Albion's mounting away-day crisis. The Scottish midfielder, on the pitch for less than a minute, arrowed a dipping shot into Joe Wildsmith's top corner in the 74th minute for his first goal in 13 months and only his third in the past three seasons, securing a fifth win in seven games for Vitor Matos' improving side.
For West Brom, it was a familiar and painful story on their travels. This ninth successive away defeat, and 10th loss in 13 league fixtures on the road, leaves Ryan Mason's team 17th in the table, just seven points above the relegation zone and, as the BBC noted, now closer to the bottom three. Swansea, by contrast, have now won four home games in a row and sit 15th, eight points clear of danger, after a contest in which they controlled long spells but survived a second-half wobble before Fulton's moment of brilliance settled it.
Makeshift Swansea Front Line Sets the Early Tone
The first half was, in Matos' words, "a balanced game" and something of a slow burner, but Swansea were clearly the sharper, more progressive side. They did so despite being without a recognised striker: leading scorer Zan Vipotnik began on the bench, while Adam Idah and Liam Cullen were ruled out through injury. Attacking midfielder Melker Widell was tasked with leading the line and, although the Swans struggled to carve out clear openings, their structure and intent were evident from the outset.
