Exeter 0-0 Walsall: chances at both ends, but no goals at St James Park

· Match Report

Exeter City and Walsall played out a goalless draw at St James Park on 5 September, a League Two fixture with chances at both ends and nothing to show for them. Walsall, who had won two and drawn two of their opening four league games, stayed unbeaten, while Exeter, 15th in the table going into the day, took a point from a home match they had the better of in front of goal.

Opta's numbers favour the hosts for chances: Exeter had 13 attempts to Walsall's eight, four of them on target against two. Walsall had more of the ball, 56% by Opta's count, and won eight corners to Exeter's four, but Jed Ward in the Walsall goal was the busier of the two keepers.

Josh Gordon, a former Walsall striker, had a shot blocked, and the rebound dropped to Sonny Cox, whose attempt Jed Ward saved well. Cox then turned and hooked a shot over from 15 yards, and later put another effort straight at Ward from a Reece Cole pass. Walsall's first effort came in the 33rd minute, when Mason Hancock sent a shot high over the bar.

The visitors, still unbeaten, began the second half the brighter. Ryan Leak had a shot deflected just over the bar, and Courtney Clarke volleyed just over from 10 yards. At the other end Ed James and Jack Fitzwater each had attempts blocked, and Cole sent a half volley into the side-netting. Elicha Ahui was shown the game's only yellow card, for a foul in the 76th minute, and was replaced in stoppage time.
