Patrick Dorgu's spectacular first goal for Manchester United gave Ruben Amorim's patched-up side a gritty 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day, lifting them to fifth in the Premier League and deepening the visitors' away-day woes.
United, without a home win for two months and missing seven senior players including captain Bruno Fernandes, also lost Mason Mount to injury at half-time. Yet they still produced just their second clean sheet of the season and their first victory without Fernandes since March 2022, despite Newcastle enjoying 66% possession and battering the home penalty area for much of the second half.
Dorgu finally finds his moment in spectacular style
On his 38th appearance for United and with what was reported as his 31st shot for the club, Dorgu finally broke his duck in unforgettable fashion. After Matheus Cunha had forced a throw-in high on the right, Diogo Dalot hurled a long throw into the area, Nick Woltemade's header looped out to the edge of the box and Dorgu, having calmly told Manuel Ugarte to leave it, strode onto the dropping ball and crashed a left-foot volley beyond Aaron Ramsdale's outstretched hand and into the corner.
