Doncaster Rovers won a penalty shootout 5-4 at Edgeley Park to eliminate Stockport County from the English League Cup second round, after 90 minutes finished level at 1-1. Alfie May put Doncaster ahead in the 49th minute, and Stockport levelled a minute later through Kyle Wootton, with neither side finding a winner in normal time.
Stockport had much the better of the ball, 72.7% possession to Doncaster's 27.3%, and finished with 19 attempts on goal to the visitors' eight, nine of them on target against one, but could not turn that pressure into a second goal. Doncaster's Owen Bailey was the only player booked, in the 82nd minute. Both sides made wholesale changes: Doncaster sent on Harry Clifton and Hakeeb Adelakun at half-time, while Stockport introduced Ben Osborn and Benony Andrésson just after the hour, plus further substitutions on both sides through the second half.
In the shootout, Stockport's Ben Osborn and Eoghan O'Connell both had penalties saved, while Benony Andrésson, Kyle Wootton, Lewis Fiorini and Jason Adigun converted their kicks. Doncaster missed only once, Harry Clifton's fourth penalty saved, with Alfie May, George Broadbent, Owen Bailey and Jamie Sterry scoring either side of it before Hakeeb Adelakun's sixth-round kick sent Doncaster through 5-4.
