Newport County ended Grimsby Town's unbeaten start to the League Two season with a 2-1 win at Rodney Parade on Saturday, Christian Doidge and Shaquille Gwengwe scoring twelve minutes apart in the second half.
It was Newport's first league win since the opening day and lifts them to 17th on nine points from eight games. Grimsby, who arrived without a defeat, drop to sixth on 13 points.
A cagey first half
Newport's organised defence kept Grimsby quiet for the whole of the opening period. Goalkeeper Jordan Wright had to deal only with attempts from Mark Shelton and Charles Vernam, and the visitors' best chance fell to Iwan Morgan, who slid in to meet Kieran Green's ball but could not make proper contact. Matt Dibley-Dias was Newport's only first-half booking, in the ninth minute.
